For many dogs, 4th of July is no cause for celebration. The loud noise and vibrations from fireworks can be so intensely terrifying that more pets go missing during this holiday weekend than any other time of year, causing animal shelters to become in-undated with dogs that have dug, chewed, and clawed their way out of their homes and yards to run for cover.
Being in an emergency situation with your dog is always stressful. To help be prepared in advance, we hosted Summer Safety Seminars last weekend. The key topics covered were choking, drowning, and heat stroke.
Before you teach a non-swimmer to swim, keep in mind that some dogs may be ill-suitedfor this activity. These include young puppies; elderly or overweight dogs; short-nosed,short-legged, or toy breeds; and dogs with medical conditions. Other dogssimply don’t like the water, and that’s okay— never force a fearful dog to swim. Dogswithout tails may have trouble when learning to swim, since the tail is used as a rudder—but they’ll soon find their own technique to make it work if they like the water.
