Lead Found in Blue Buffalo Food

Lead Found in Blue Buffalo Food

Oct 07, 2017Emily Wallace

Blue Buffalo is involved in a class action lawsuit regarding the contamination of lead in some of their products. This lawsuit alleges that Blue Buffalo knew about the unsafe levels of lead in their food, but disregarded the issue and continued to sell contaminated products. Lead is a classified carcinogen, meaning that it can potentially lead to cancer. It is also linked to chronic poisoning, development and reproductive disorders, and injuries to the nervous system. Lead can build up in dogs’ bodies and as it accumulates over time, dogs can become sick.

Some Blue Buffalo’s foods were found to have extremely unsafe levels of lead. As a basis of comparison, the acceptable levels of lead in a human bottle of water is 5ppb (parts per billion).

  • Blue Wilderness Chicken Recipe for Small Breed Adult Dogs - 200ppb

  • Blue Basics Grain-Free Turkey & Potato Recipe for Adult Dogs - 840 ppb

Healthy Spot believes this is unacceptable and that our pets deserve better.  As Co-Founder Andrew Kim puts it, “We believe in Profits with Principles. Even though it would be easier to carry the fastest growing and popular pet foods that have commercials and advertisements running everywhere, we are committed to inspiring healthy pet lifestyles.”

  • No more blue for my 3 boys. I have been feeding them blue for years. Sucks that you try to do the best for your animal and these companies just lie to you.

  • I have a 7 year old malamute/Shepard
Mix who suffered early optic nerve damage and had to get both eyes removed by 5 years old. She was on BB until I started working for HS and finding out that lead poisoning can cause damage to Optic nerves angers me so much when we are told this food is a better alternative to other kibbles.

  • Just my opinion, a dog food that has this many recalls/problems, ie. Ingredients not listed, high levels of lead ECT is NOT safe. Hopefully, they can finally get this company shut down for good!!! BB isn’t safe for any animal.

  • They boast about how bad other foods are for your dogs yet they are charging you to poison your dog… And yes to the previous commenter. Lead poisoning does cause seizures…. I’m so sorry…

  • Hello Lynne,

We are sorry to hear about your 3 year old’s seizures. We apologize we can’t answer your question. We are not veterinarians to make a medical diagnosis and would recommend consulting your vet about your concerns of potential lead exposure resulting from feeding this diet. Our thoughts are with your 3 year old and hope you find the cause in order to improve your pet’s health.

  • Hello Donald,

Lead is known as a carcinogen and at certain levels can cause cancer. This conclusion is consistent with statement made by Dr. Carol Osborne of Chagrin Falls Veterinary Center & Pet Clinic regarding this Blue Buffalo lawsuit. While we appreciate the concern around the proper classification of lead, what is far more important is that consumers are aware that lead, especially these dangerous levels, should not be in our pets diets that are being fed daily. Surely, we can agree to that.

  • I buy Blue Buffalo because I always thought it was better for my dogs to eat and the price says it all and now to find out that there’s lead in it, I will absolutely change dog food if this is the case ! How dare they allow this, especially for the price that they charge!!!
