Freshen Up Your Pup's Look This Spring With These New Hairstyles!

Mar 03, 2021Emily Wallace

Spring is a time to reset and refresh, whether it's through spring cleaning, fashion trends or even your regular routine. As we step into the next season and weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to fur-eshen up your pup's look! Not only does a groom keep your pet healthy, but it totally boosts their self-esteem (let’s be real, they know when they look good.)

We spoke to our Director of Services, Patricia, about when and why to consider new grooming styles for your pup, plus our award-winning groomers at Healthy Spot put together this wagnificent list of hot hairstyles that are bound to make your four-legged friend stand out and shine!

Here are a few questions to keep in mind for when it’s time to consider a new groom for your pup:

  • Does your pup’s current cut suit your lifestyle? If you like to hike with your pup but dislike the time it takes to clean them up afterwards, you’ll want to consider this when choosing your groom.
  • Have the seasons changed and affected the weather? Just like how you update your clothing with the season, both for style and practicality, you should consider the same for your dog. You wouldn't want to wear a parka in the middle of summer, but sometimes we unknowingly have our dogs do just that.
  • Are you only going with the same cut out of habit? Sometimes, we do the same haircut on our dogs and don't realize we could have a much more flattering cut if we gave our stylist more free reign to do what they think is best.
  • Does your pup’s cut suit their personality? Imagine if you are more of an introvert, but you were forced to wear a pink mohawk in public and didn't like all the attention. We can think of our dogs in a similar way. Using the dog's personality as an inspiration for their cut can be more practical and give them the attention level they are comfortable with.

Now that you have these helpful questions to consider, check out 7 fun looks as inspo for your pup’s next groom!

Happy - Miniature Poodle

Happy is modeling a round head with a short puppy muzzle and his ears hiding in his fluffy hair. Happy's body is trimmed short with fuller teddy-bear-style legs that are tapered shorter at the top like a bowling pin.

  • This look is best for: Curly-coated breeds of all sizes.
  • How long this groom lasts: 6 weeks.
  • Maintenance: With this cut, your dog will need to be brushed and combed anytime they're bathed at home and brushed at least once per week.
  • Why this style? This style will help prevent matts around the ears and body due to the shorter length.

Frankie - Havanese

Frankie's look is styled by creating textured, choppy layers on his head and ears. His muzzle is trimmed short to show off his rockstar mane while his legs are full to provide balance with his head.

  • This look is best for: Dogs with drop coats (straight hair) and Doodles.
  • How long this groom lasts: 6 weeks.
  • Maintenance: With this cut, your dog will need to be brushed and combed anytime they're bathed at home and brushed at least once per week.
  • Why this style? It keeps their mouth cleaner for longer because of the shorter chin style. This is a great style for parents that appreciate the natural look and don't want their dog to look like they are "trying too hard."

Buddy - Miniature Poodle

Buddy is sporting a soft mohawk and a short, round muzzle. His ears are trimmed short to complement his tiny mohawk. Buddy’s feet are also trimmed short, like sneakers, which is one of the new trends this season.

  • This look is best for: Dogs with drop coats (straight hair), curly coats and Doodles. It’s also good for dogs that like to get rough and dirty during play.
  • How long this groom lasts: 6-8 weeks.
  • Maintenance: With this cut, your dog will need to be brushed and combed anytime they're bathed at home and brushed at least once per week.
  • Why this style? This style lasts longer and the chin, ears and feet are nice and short! It’s great for preventing messy clean-ups after hikes and beach trips, making this a perfect new style for spring and summer!

Herman - Bichon Frise

Herman is fierce with this edgy look! He’s wearing cords in his mane contrasted by a puppy muzzle. His body is trimmed short so Herman can easily wear the latest fashions without getting matted.

  • This look is best for: Dogs with curly and wavy coats. It’s also good for dogs with a laid-back personality.
  • How long this groom lasts: 8 weeks or more.
  • Maintenance: With this cut, your dog will need to be brushed and combed anytime they're bathed at home and brushed at least once per week. Brushing this cut should only take a few minutes--be sure to never brush the cords!
  • Why this style? This style lasts much longer than traditional cuts. It’s great for parents that may not have the time to do a lot of grooming at home. This style will get a lot of attention and is great for people that like to dress their pups in clothes.

Lana - Shih Tzu

Lana is modeling a short round muzzle with a tiny mohawk. The mohawk is connected to her full body, which is trimmed round. This latest trend is made by shaving the ears and legs very short to create a whimsical sheep appearance.

  • This look is best for: Dogs with drop coats (Straight hair), curly coats, and wavy coat
  • How long this groom lasts: 4-6 weeks.
  • Maintenance: With this cut, your dog will need to be brushed and combed anytime they're bathed at home and brushed at least twice per week.
  • Why this style? This is a great style for pet parents who love long coats but struggle to brush the more difficult areas (face and legs). Keep in mind that this is not a good style for pet parents who like to dress their pups in clothes!

Sherlock - Maltipoo

Sherlock is in a puppy face with hidden ears, to take years off his distinguished gentlemen's look. His body is trimmed in a longer puppy style to minimize the pink of his skin showing.

This cut keeps their mouth cleaner longer because of the shorter chin style. This is also a great style for parents that want their older dog to look more like a puppy.

Bowie - Miniature Goldendoodle

Bowie's look is created by leaving his head and ears in their natural state, then separating his muzzle from the shaggy locks on his head. His muzzle is trimmed round and left slightly fuller to create a puppy look. Bowie’s body is still fluffy but taken a little shorter for easier maintenance.

  • This look is best for: Dogs with wavy coats, Doodles, Wheaton Terriers, etc.
  • How long this groom lasts: 4-6 weeks.
  • Maintenance: With this cut, your dog will need to be brushed and combed anytime they're bathed at home and brushed at least twice per week.
  • Why this style? This is a great style for parents that appreciate the natural look.

  • The “Frankie” cut looks perfect for Ninasimone…
She needs to heal from a procedure she had which shaved one side of her completely.
As soon as she heals, I will call to make appointment.
