December 05, 2019 — The J. M. Smucker Company announced a voluntary recall for certain lots of Special Kitty® wet, canned cat food. This recall was initiated in light of potential health concerns that may be associated with ingredients that do not meet the Company’s quality and safety standards.
The product in question is Special Kitty® Mixed Grill Dinner Pate. This product is sold both individually and as a part of variety packs. If you are a pet parent that has purchased any of the following product lots, immediately dispose of the product:
Consuming the affected product may cause nausea, vomiting, excessive salivation or diarrhea. More severe symptoms may also show, including difficulty walking, seizures and potentially death (in extreme cases). Pet parents should contact their veterinarian right away if their cat is displaying any of these symptoms.
These Special Kitty® foods are sold in grocery stores across the nation and online. None of their other products are included in this recall.
An investigation by the FDA is being conducted with full cooperation with the J. M. Smucker Company. So far, the investigation reveals that the recalled products were manufactured during a single, specific day. This investigation is ongoing to prevent the chance of further issues.
The FDA is encouraging pet parents with questions to call 88-569-6767 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. ET, and that “if pet parents would like to share information about this recall with the FDA they are encouraged to do so through the agency’s reporting portal: https://www.safetyreporting.hhs.gov/”.
Although Healthy Spot does not carry Special Kitty® products, we recommend that you reach out to the retailer that you purchased the product from to see their return policy on recalled products and dispose of it in a sealed waste bin. Be sure to thoroughly disinfect any parts of your home that the impacted product may have come in contact with.
