An Eco-Friendly Pet
Small adjustments to you and your pet’s lifestyle can make all the difference in your community. From diet to hygiene, here are some ways to begin living a sustainable pet lifestyle.
Spay Or Neuter Your Pet
There are over 70,000 puppies and kittens born each day in the United States! Think about all the resources it will take to care for and raise all these animals. Not to mention that a large percentage of these animals will end up in city shelters and euthanized. The first step you can take to helping your pet be eco-friendly is to have them spayed or neutered.
Ditch The Junk Food
Natural and organic pet foods use proteins that are raised in sustainable and humane ways without added drugs or hormones. Most conventional food brands found at big box retailers and supermarkets consist of reconstituted animal by-products. These by-products come from the beef and poultry industries; which are not known for their eco-friendly business practices.
Keep Your Cats Inside
Cats are not the most environmentally conscious animals and are notorious bird killers. If let outside they can wreak havoc on the local wildlife. Cats that live in the wild or indoor pets allowed to roam outdoors kill from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental U.S. each year!
Rethink Your Pet’s Poop
The most environmentally destructive products are made from plastic. So do your part to celebrate Earth Day and use bio-degradable poop bags such as The Original Poop Bags, which are carried at Healthy Spot. Biodegradable bags typically break down in about 1 month as opposed to an estimated 1,500 years for a plastic bag in a landfill. By simply switching your poop bag brand you and your fur-child can be one step closer to being eco-friendly.
Avoid Chemical Laced Products
Use natural pet-care and cleaning products such as Biokleen (Sold At Healthy Spot) when cleaning up after your pet. An all natural shampoo will also be a better option than traditional shampoos that contain harsh chemicals. One example is Dr. McGrath’s Shampoo and Wipes.
Beyond filling our shelves with healthy and safe products, we also seek out and work with companies that are environmentally conscious as well. Biodegradable, recyclable, or recycled, these products keep your pet happy along with keeping the environment healthy.
Open Farm Pet Food
If you are going to have an Eco-Friendly Pet then you need to start with their bowl. Open Farm’s entire supply chain is certified by a third-party organization specializing in humane animal care and sustainable farming practices. They have also partnered with Teracycle to launch the first North American pet food bag recycling program. Over 95% of pet food bags are not recyclable so Open Farm decided to provide a free and easy way to recycle their bags. Learn more at Terracycle.com. Stop by Healthy Spot today to pick up a small or large bag of Pork, Fish or Chicken!
Another eco-friendly product at Healthy Spot is Nature’s Kitchen dog food. All Nature’s Kitchen food tubs and labels are 100% recyclable. Nature’s Kitchen tubs are made out of polypropylene, which is designated as PP on the bottom of the tub. PP is categorized as Recycle Level 5. Nature’s Kitchen selected PP because it possesses the versatility and stability that their food requires during the packaging and freezing process – plus it saves a ton of space in your freezer and looks cool! We carry Grain Free Chicken, Turkey and Beef! Take advantage of our April promos and get 15% off Nature's Kitchen!
This company is as eco-friendly as you can get! They use post-consumer recycled materials in all their products. In fact they reclaim over 100,000 bike tubes every year; ultimately saving over 30 tons from landfills. We carry fun toys from CycleDog that your dog will be sure to enjoy while unbeknownst to him he will also be eco-friendly! Take an extra 15% off all Cycle Dog toys during the month of April!
The Original Poopbags
Proudly saving the earth since 2003. The Original Poopbags plant bags are made from plants and renewable sources. They are certified bio-degradable, meaning they will break down in landfills. Traditional plastic poop bags will remain buried in landfills for thousands of years. This eco-friendly pet product is the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day this month.
PawNosh Recycled Glass Bowls
Not only are these bowls eco-friendly, they are also very stylish. These bowl are made from 100% recycled glass. Each PawNosh bowl reclaim and recycles a minimum of four 8oz glass containers as well as industrial glass that would otherwise be buried in the landfill.
Biokleen Stain and Odor Removers
Made from a blend of natural live enzyme cultures, citrus extracts and plant based surfactants and no toxic chemicals. Biokleen removes the toughest stains and odors with minimal environmental impact.
Another great eco-friendly pet company carried here at Healthy Spot are BecoPets litter boxes, litter scoops, bowls and dog toys. Started in 2009, BecoPets’ goal was to “design environmentally friendly products that outperform the same as their non-green competitors.” They did just that as their products are made from bamboo and rice husk fibers. In fact they use recycled chopsticks to get their bamboo! All BecoPets products are 100% natural and breakdown and biodegrade in landfills.
