Obedience Courses

Brief History - Who We Are

For nearly 10 years, Alabama native Mary Tully has trained animals in many facilities across the nation, not only in Southern California but also in Orlando, Tampa, San Diego, and Hawaii. With the unique privilege of working with a huge variety animal species, she learned and applied the same general behavioral principles from chickens to dolphins and sea lions, and sought to bring this fresh take on behavior modification to the dog training world.

More than three years after starting Tully’s Training in Los Angeles, the company has expanded to San Diego, employs six exceptional trainers diverse experiences and backgrounds, and has worked with over 500 satisfied families in Southern California.

Mary feels it’s most rewarding to watch people learn that they can teach their dog to listen to them without using force or fear: "When people see the power of clear communication, trust, and reinforcement, it changes the way they interact with the world around them. Or at least it changes the way they interact with their dog, and that's a start!"

The Tully’s Training team possesses a unique perspective and understanding about how behavior works and how to modify it effectively using modern science-based techniques.

Our approach to behavior modification is based on the science of learning using positive-reinforcement techniques, the same techniques that are used to train animals in the most respectable zoos, aquariums, and marine mammal facilities across the country.

Work with your dog, not against them. We teach you how to use what your dog likes to get your dog to do what you want. It really is that simple! Positive reinforcement is the safest and most effective way to train a dog. Our methods have been scientifically studied and proven time and time again. Learn to work with your dog like a professional trainer!

Relationship is everything. Using simple techniques, we teach you how to build a stronger relationship with your dog based on trust and understanding while learning to work together as a team. Your dog wants to be good - it just doesn't know how! Help your dog be better by gaining his or her confidence and trust.

We look at yours and your dog’s daily routine and lifestyle to find the root of whatever problem you might be having. Before we take on any new clients we complete a thorough in-home consultation and behavioral evaluation on your dog. We then customize a training program around your dog's needs, giving us the best possible results in the shortest amount of time.

By using “problem” behaviors as examples, you’ll get a complete dog training education that is focused on the big picture rather than a few isolated problems. Learn how to read your animal, how behavior works, and how to modify it. You will not only learn how to fix current problem behaviors, but keep future problem behaviors from occurring. Your dog isn't the only one getting an education!

Our Values

You can train your dog till the cows come home, but if they aren’t getting enough exercise and enrichment, or if they don’t feel well because their diet is poor, they still won’t be able to give you their best. We take everything about your dog’s well-being into consideration to ensure you are setting your dog up to successfully give you the best behavior they possibly can!

Even despite over 30+ years combined experience in animal behavior modification, our team is passionately dedicated to keeping informed of new ideas and research in the training field to ensure our clients are getting the best possible tools they can get to see results.

Giving back to the community is something that is very important to all of us at Tully’s Training. Currently, we work with two different rescue organizations where we donate a free training session to any dog who is adopted from their care. A recent study conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy found that only 4% of the dogs who were surrendered into shelters had received formal obedience training. We can be part of the solution to the shelter overpopulation problem and we are doing our best to do just that.

Duration: 5 weeks

Description: We have structured this class with a holistic approach with the mindset that this may be the only dog focused class most of our students will ever take. “Positive Dogs Secondary” teaches dog owners how to apply training techniques in real world scenarios using a holistic approach. This class touches upon everything every dog and parent needs to be successful. We cover sit, stay, focus, down, on-leash manners, come when called, leave-it, and more but it’s not just behaviors that we teach. Each class starts with a discussion focused on making sure your pup is getting exactly what he or she needs in order the be a balanced, well-adjusted member of your family. We work on and teach socialization and guide you on how to read and translate your dog’s body language/signals to better understand what they mean and how to apply them to social situations. We incorporate interactive elements into these discussions whenever possible, for example: during the “Nutrition” discussion, treats and food samples are supplied, while puzzle toys are made available and used during the brief discussion about “Enrichment”. Our final class concludes with a graduation ceremony and party.

Description of the CGC program from the AKC website:

“The CGC Program teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. Some homeowner’s insurance companies are encouraging CGC testing, and an increasing number of apartments and condos require that resident dogs pass the CGC test. The CGC Program also includes the AKC CGC℠ Responsible Dog Owner Pledge.”

This course focuses on the specific skills necessary to pass the CGC exam.
