Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. Recalls Sportsmix, Pro Pac and Splash Fat Cat Products

January 12, 2021 — The FDA announced that Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc., who released a recall on December 30, 2020, has expanded the brands included, recalling over 1000 batches between 3 brands of dog and cat food. The recall was initiated due to potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. To date, the FDA is aware of at least 70 deaths and 80 illnesses among pets that ingested the since-recalled foods. The investigation is ongoing.

Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. recalled foods from the following brands: Sportsmix, Pro Pac and Splash Fat Cat. If you are a pet parent that has purchased any of the following product lots, reach out to your vet if you notice your pet displaying any concerning symptoms and immediately dispose of the product:

Recalled January 11, 2021: Look for an expiration date of 07/09/22 with a lot code that includes "05" to identify the tainted products made at the company's Oklahoma facility.

Aflatoxin, the poisonous carcinogen believed to have infiltrated these products, is produced by mold and can have serious effects on your pet's health. Aflatoxin has been known to cause vomiting, jaundice, diarrhea and other abnormal symptoms in pets, and could even cause long-term liver issues or death.
