An Eco-Friendly Pet

Small adjustments to you and your pet’s lifestyle can make all the difference in your community. From diet to hygiene, here are some ways to begin living a sustainable pet lifestyle.

    Spay Or Neuter Your Pet

There are over 70,000 puppies and kittens born each day in the United States! Think about all the resources it will take to care for and raise all these animals. Not to mention that a large percentage of these animals will end up in city shelters and euthanized. The first step you can take to helping your pet be eco-friendly is to have them spayed or neutered.

        Ditch The Junk Food

Natural and organic pet foods use proteins that are raised in sustainable and humane ways without added drugs or hormones. Most conventional food brands found at big box retailers and supermarkets consist of reconstituted animal by-products. These by-products come from the beef and poultry industries; which are not known for their eco-friendly business practices.

        Keep Your Cats Inside

Cats are not the most environmentally conscious animals and are notorious bird killers. If let outside they can wreak havoc on the local wildlife. Cats that live in the wild or indoor pets allowed to roam outdoors kill from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental U.S. each year!

          Rethink Your Pet’s Poop

The most environmentally destructive products are made from plastic. So do your part to celebrate Earth Day and use bio-degradable poop bags such as The Original Poop Bags, which are carried at Healthy Spot. Biodegradable bags typically break down in about 1 month as opposed to an estimated 1,500 years for a plastic bag in a landfill. By simply switching your poop bag brand you and your fur-child can be one step closer to being eco-friendly.

            Avoid Chemical Laced Products

Use natural pet-care and cleaning products such as Biokleen (Sold At Healthy Spot) when cleaning up after your pet. An all natural shampoo will also be a better option than traditional shampoos that contain harsh chemicals. One example is Dr. McGrath’s Shampoo and Wipes.

              Eco-Friendly Products

Beyond filling our shelves with healthy and safe products, we also seek out and work with companies that are environmentally conscious as well. Biodegradable, recyclable, or recycled, these products keep your pet happy along with keeping the environment healthy.

Another great eco-friendly pet company carried here at Healthy Spot are BecoPets litter boxes, litter scoops, bowls and dog toys. Started in 2009, BecoPets’ goal was to “design environmentally friendly products that outperform the same as their non-green competitors.” They did just that as their products are made from bamboo and rice husk fibers. In fact they use recycled chopsticks to get their bamboo! All BecoPets products are 100% natural and breakdown and biodegrade in landfills.
